The Alternating Current is a blog that focuses on the lives and needs of people with too many passions. Also called Renaissance Souls by Margaret Lobenstine and Scanners by Barbara Sher, we are people who can’t stand to sit still in one career for very long, and have varied interests that pull us in many directions at once. This is a blog about what it means to be a Renaissance Soul, a Scanner and how to deal with our many varied interests. It’s about the lives of other kindred spirits and about my own journey as I learn how to fully embrace who I am and how I work.
I am Alexia – the author of this blog. I’ve known that I’ve been a little different than most since I was a little girl. I barely tested into the gifted program (by not being able to draw a kite, as I recall…) yet excelled in just about everything I did as I grew up. I truly didn’t know how to answer “what do you want to be when you grow up” so I always gave the answer I thought the person asking wanted. It was usually doctor or dentist or even ophthalmologist — mainly because those always popped up on those silly aptitude tests.
College was a different story for many reasons, but suffice to say that I got bored with having to focus on one discipline. I am a renaissance soul, a scanner, and possibly even a gifted adult. My brain tends to work a bit faster than most — I absorb and learn things quickly and once I’ve gotten what I need to out of whatever it is I’m learning, it’s time for the next new thing. I’m not bragging, in fact, I used to lament the fact that I couldn’t really settle on any one thing and make a real career of it. My father frequently reminds me I’m not getting any younger and should have had a stable career by now, and I’m slowly getting used to the fact that I don’t have to please him with what I do in my life.
I love change. I love to travel. I love music, the arts, computers, the internet & technology. I’ve been a web developer most of my adult life, and it suits me just fine when I need money, but I am also an artist, a craftswoman, a writer, a musician, and possibly some other -ist, -ian, or -er I haven’t discovered yet.
For those of you who are Renaissance Souls, welcome. I hope this site helps you on your journey, and would love to get your input. For those of you who aren’t quite sure, I hope you stick around and find out!
