Ever wish projects came with GPS?

Find your way to done with Creative Cartography!

**Registration is closed, keep an eye out for the home study version coming soon**

It’s almost the end of the year (GASP!) and there’s still that one project you wanted to finish but haven’t yet.

Wouldn’t it be great to have a map for this project to show you the way?

Wouldn’t it be awesome if you could actually get it done before 2012 comes around?

Create a real map on real paper to show you the way to the end of your project and finally get it done

Introducing Creative Cartography

So… What is Creative Cartography?

Creative Cartography is a 4-week long expedition where we go from :

“OH YES! I wanna do this project but… wait. How do I start?”

to

“I came, I saw, I explored & see what I have to show for it!”

We’ll be taking a different approach than you may be used to.

Gone are meaningless lists, stupefying spreadsheets, and boring checkboxes. YAY!

We’ll be making maps!

That is, truly drawing and doodling our way to a treasure map for your project.

Here’s one I made for the Alternating Current website:

the colored-in bits are what I've completed

And here’s what you’re getting:

  • Four group calls starting on November 9th and held on every Wednesday after that (and recordings if you can’t make it)
  • A Skype group for support and daily (M-F) Expedition Check Ins
  • Instruction on doodling (yes, doodling!) and how to create your Project and Daily Expedition Maps.
  • Map and Chart Templates
  • Worksheets & Handouts to help you on your way
  • And if you choose the upgraded package, you’ll get an extra 4 group calls for an extra $40 to take you up until the end of the year (on Mondays at the same time) and give you the support you need to keep moving on your project (and who knows, maybe even GET IT DONE!)

Here’s what Tori had to say after she took the Creative Cartography Class:

Map-making has seriously changed my approach to project management. Gone are the stressful and endlessly rewritten task lists that never fit my right-brained creative process. They’ve been replaced by a visual, flexible method of planning. that not only doesn’t stress me out, but makes me smile, AND it works… the project I used for the class was my Totems and I actually launched the things! Yay!

What you’ll have after 4 weeks:

  • A finished project map for your chosen project
  • Daily charts to help keep you on track
  • PROGRESS! on your project! Whee!

And here are the topics for the calls (not necessarily in order):

  • Project planning and why I use Visual Project Planning instead of lists
  • How to break apart your project into small, doable chunks
  • The concept of the Acceptable Minimum for daily progress
  • Creating a project map, including doodling lessons
  • How to keep forward momentum using Daily Charts
  • Q&A and help if you need help planning your project

Ready?

I want to make maps!

Major Note:

This course is heavy on the analog. Pen, markers & paper rule this process. Don’t be afraid of the doodling or map-making process because it’s not about art here. It’s about creating something that works for you, that’s easy and that will be front and center in your field of vision while working on your project.

What if I can’t draw?

Please don’t let that scare you away. I’ll be making some templates as well as short doodling lessons so you’ll be able to make your own map with next to no effort.

Isn’t this just for artsy types?

Nope. It’s not just for artsy types. You don’t even have to know how to draw! If you have a project (any project) and you’re tired of not being able to see how far you’ve come and what you have to do next because you’re using lists (and keep misplacing them…), this class will definitely help.

Birdy Diamond“Creative Cartography gave me the tools to organize & plan out that Big, Hairy, Audacious Project I want to do. (And all the others, too! :) ) And as an added bonus, during one of the calls I learned that I’m not a Loser, I’m an Explorer! The knowledge that I’m not alone in my needs & thinking was HUGE!”

Why are you drawing and not using some digital thing?

There’s something that happens when you use pen, paper & markers in the planning process. Not only is it easy to see and keep track of (apps and programs are hidden until you actually open them), it integrates more of your senses than typey-typing on a computer, which makes what you’re doing stick more firmly in your brain. It’s science.

The senses we’ll be using:

  • Sight: the map is a visual representation of your project
  • Sound: the scratching of your pen on the paper
  • Smell: the scent of paper and ink (try using scented markers, but pen & regular ink have their own scent, even if it’s subtle)
  • Touch: the feel and motion of your pen across the paper

Taste is one that’s left out for obvious reasons. Unless you actually LIKE the taste of paper, then I don’t recommend eating it. Especially with inks on it. But if you want, you can have some chocolate while you make your map…

Arrow - Hand Drawn RedP.S.
This is the very last time I’m offering this class for at least a year. I’m having a baby early 2012 (my first!) so I don’t know when I’ll be able to teach live again. If you learn well in a group and desire the feedback and support a live group and instructor can give you, then this will be your last chance for a while.

100% Satisfaction Guarantee - Hand Drawn RedIf for some reason you don’t find this class helpful, I’ll enact my Make-It-Right Guarantee.

What’s that?

The Make-It-Right Guarantee means this:

I expect my students to do all the work, participate and listen to all the lessons, and put in 100%. After all, you get what you put into it.

So, if you’ve done all the homework and exercises and participated in and/or listened to every class, I will give you up to an hour of of my time (a $150 value)  for you and I to work through your plan until we get something that works for you.

And if that doesn’t work, I’ll refund it all. Sound Good?

Now that we’ve got that out of the way…

I want to make maps!

I want to make maps AND get the extra support I need.

See you in class!
